When his side is struggling in his maiden IPL match, a 22-year-old Australian goes out to bat and scores 72* under duress. For a debut, not too terrible.
In the IPL, some players need a few games to settle in. Some people never actually do. Then there are those exceptional people who seem to fit in right away when they arrive. If Tuesday’s match at New Chandigarh is any indication, the young Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly is definitely in that third group.
After a furious chase, Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans by three wickets before Connolly calmed things down. PBKS had lost four wickets for just eight runs at one stage. The pursuit was fading. Connolly, however, did not blink.
Gujarat Titans bat first: A tale of good starts, wasted
After winning the toss, GT decided to bat, which initially appeared to be a wise choice. At different times, Jos Buttler, Sai Sudharsan, and Shubman Gill were all at the bat, hitting clean fours and appearing fluid. In the power play alone, nine boundaries were scored. The outfield was fast, and the surface was flat, making it ideal for a large total.
However, keeping in is just as important in T20 cricket as striking hard. And just when they were about to blow up, GT’s top-order kept pulling themselves out.
Chahal makes things worse
The slowing was mostly designed by Yuzvendra Chahal. With GT well positioned at 65 for 1 in the seventh over, he came in and asked questions right away. He used a slog sweep that went straight to deep midwicket to remove Gill for the fourth time in IPL history. Traditional Chahal involves bowling slowly, changing the line, and waiting for the batsman to make a mistake.
Similar to Buttler, who finished first with 38 off 33, Buttler was hit by Xavier Bartlett at the boundary after attempting a massive shot over long-on. The tall seamer had to use every inch of his reach to make the crisp, high catch.
GT scored just 77 runs for 3 wickets in the middle overs. GT lost the plot in a system where a game’s middle phase may define it.
The death-over genius of Vyshak
At the end, Vijaykumar Vyshak was the most impressive bowler. He continued to induce hitters to hit straight to fielders by blending slower balls into the pitch with full-length deliveries. Washington Sundar made a severe point cut error. Shah Rukh Khan’s square leg was slogged from straight to deep. Vyshak took three wickets in total, demonstrating why death bowling is an art form.
At any location, 162 is a competitive total, but GT would have thought they had left at least 15–20 runs out there. No one exceeded 39, although three of their top four reached 25 or above. That’s a common pattern in T20s: the incapacity to change gears after a strong start is more often the issue than skill.
In response, Punjab Kings said, “From flying start to scary wobble.”
The chase got underway with amazing speed. Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly took the offensive against GT right away. They blasted three sixes in Kagiso Rabada’s fourth over, equaling GT’s innings total in only one batting over. That’s a statement, not simply aggressive cricket.
From the beginning, Connolly’s strokeplay was beautiful. With little effort, he carved length balls over cover while deftly utilizing Ashok Sharma’s speed. He demonstrated that he was not frightened by the top names in the game by hitting sixes off two consecutive Rashid overs. After ten overs, PBKS was cruising at 83 for 1.
Prasidh causes a breakdown
Then followed one of the moments that T20 cricket is known for: a quick, violent collapse. In just 16 balls, Prasidh Krishna claimed four wickets for eight runs. A half-volley to deep midwicket was chipped by Shreyas Iyer. A slower ball was sliced straight to cover by Nehal Wadhera. The keeper was stolen by Shashank Singh. Marcus Stoinis was positioned in the deep third.
The fact that none of the four dismissals were unplayable deliveries is noteworthy. The damage was caused by the strain of the pursuit and the fielding positions. The game had drastically changed at 121 for 6, with 42 runs required from 30 balls. All of a sudden, GT was the favorite.
Connolly exemplifies poise.
At this point, the debut turned into a noteworthy tale. The pandemonium surrounding them affects most batters, even the most seasoned ones. Wickets are dropping. The necessary rate is increasing. There is tension in the audience. Additionally, you are participating in your first IPL game.
Connolly remained unflinching. In the sixteenth over, he targeted Rabada with two short balls, cutting one over backward point for four to reach fifty, and then drawing the next over square leg for six. With the game at stake, fifty off a debut knock. It’s not even covered by ice-cool.
Prasidh was pulled for sixes in the 17th and 19th overs by Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett, who made deft cameos around him. Those two strikes essentially decided the match. With five balls remaining, PBKS reached the finish line.
The statistic that accurately depicts the situation is that GT hit three sixes.
PBKS reached 14. Six-hitting is intimately related to run pace, pressure release, and momentum in contemporary Twenty20 cricket, making it more than simply entertainment. In retrospect, the outcome is rarely shocking when one team hits over five times as many sixes as the other.
Additionally, PBKS let up 14 extras, 11 of which were wides, including four from Arshdeep Singh in the last over. bowling carelessly in the last moments. This time, it didn’t cost them the game, but in a tighter game, it would.
Things to remember from this game
The Gujarat Titans will be irritated. After receiving starts, their hitters discarded them. Although their bowlers put up a valiant fight via Prasidh, they were unable to win in the last moments. It’s a defeat based on little margins that mount up rather than poor play.
Connolly’s rise to prominence is the news for the Punjab Kings. However, the depth of their batting, together with the contributions of Jansen and Bartlett under duress, reveals a squad with genuine character. Everyone was reminded by Yuzvendra Chahal’s two wickets that he is still among the format’s most cunning spinners.
For years, highlight reels will repeat Cooper Connolly’s 72* in his IPL debut. Not because it was showy from beginning to end, but rather because of when it occurred and how composed he was. That is not fortuitous. That is the development of a player who has the potential to make a significant impact in this competition.
